Part-time workers boost employment stats
An
increase in students finding part-time or
temporary work has reportedly boosted employment
stats, which have risen at the fastest rate in
40 years during the second quarter.
The number of full-time workers has also
increased.
ONS figures state that employment rose to 29.2m
in the second quarter, representing an increase
of 286,000, which was the sharpest quarterly
increase since records began.
However despite the positive boost there are
still widespread fears that unemployment could
make a comeback, as the number of people
claiming jobless benefits rose by 2,300 to 1.47m
between July and August.
According to The Telegraph, Vicky Redwood, of
Capital Economics, said the figures showed
"cracks are appearing in the recovery".
She added: "Even if the labour market holds up
in the near term, this is unlikely to last once
the public sector job cuts start in earnest."
The British Chambers of Commerce expect that
unemployment will peak in the first half of
2012.
