Stars of English Dining Recognised by Michelin
Nine new stars have been awarded in England by
Michelin, in its 2012 guide to Great Britain &
Ireland.
A
British pub was awarded two stars for the first
time in Michelin history, which Editor Rebecca
Burr says is "a good news story" for the public
house industry, particularly in the difficult
economic climate, adding that it "confirms our
view that pubs serving good food are the ones
that continue to thrive."
The Hand and Flowers in Marlow, Buckinghamshire,
was opened in 2005 by Tom and Beth Kerridge and
achieved its first Michelin star during its
first year of trading. The dishes, which are
familiar and heart-warming with such classics as
battered fish, have been described as
"sophisticated" and a "perfect match" for the
interior of the pub.
The Hand & Flowers is the first two-star pub in
the country, while further North, Nottingham is
flying the flag for the East Midlands with the
Restaurant Sat Bains with Rooms, the only
two-star establishment in the region. "Sat's
cooking has always been original and creative
and now focus has been added to the flair," said
Rebecca.
The new Guide covers a wide geographical spread
and includes the Driftwood Hotel in Portscatho,
Cornwall, the Pass restaurant at South Lodge
hotel near Horsham, Sussex, and four restaurants
in London that have all gained a star for the
first time.
Matt Gillan, head chef at The Pass at South
Lodge near Horsham who was awarded his first
star, said. "I feel truly honoured. To be
awarded a Michelin star is a remarkable
achievement. I am immensely proud of the team.
It just goes to show that hard work does pay
off!"
The Bib Gourmand, an award given to
establishments offering good cooking at moderate
prices, has been awarded to 28 restaurants this
year.
