Graduate unemployment figures soar
The latest government figures released by the
ONS (Office for National Statistics) for Q3 2010
shows that one in five UK university graduates
failed to find a job last year, and graduate
unemployment has now reached its highest level
since 1995.
The figures show that the number of unemployed
graduates has risen faster than UK unemployment
as a whole, with jobless university-leavers
moving from 10.6% to 20%, compared to the UK's
overall unemployment rise from 5.2% to 7.9%.
In
addition, the ONS states that unemployment
figures for 16-17 year-olds is at a historic
high, with 44.3% of eligible job seekers in that
age bracket unable to find work. This is
reportedly the highest level since records for
this sector began in 1992.
According to the BBC, National Union of Students
president Aaron Porter said:
"These new figures show that graduates are
encountering an exceptionally hostile jobs
market and the government persists with policies
that put the burden of the country's debt on the
young."
However, research by the Association of Graduate
Recruiters that surveyed over 200 UK employers
suggests that the outlook may be brightening, as
graduate job vacancies have recently risen by
8.9%.
