Apprenticeship jobs key to the hospitality
sector
People 1st, the sector skills council for
numerous industries including hospitality, has
called for more businesses to introduce
recognised apprenticeship schemes for young
people.
Chairman David Fairhurst commented that
apprenticeships serve an "important role" in
maintaining high standards of training and
development, and the organisation is committed
to raising the number of apprentices working
throughout the UK.
Large hospitality brands such as Barcelo Hotels,
Punch Taverns, McDonald's Restaurants and JD
Wetherspoon have an established apprenticeship
programme and many senior figures have risen
through the company ranks by starting off in
such schemes.
HR
director at Barcelo Hotels, Des Lawson, says
that their apprenticeship scheme enables the
company to train its own people, therefore
giving candidates the exact skills they need to
succeed.
"We identified skills gaps in our business that
we knew we had to fill and the answer for us was
to train our own people," he said, according to
People 1st. "Apprenticeships were a natural way
of doing this. Nowadays, the apprenticeship
framework is far more flexible and
employer-friendly - you can add onto them,
tailor them and make sure they fit the business
needs as well as those of the individual going
through the qualification.
"My advice to other employers is to commit to
apprenticeships - the benefits far outweigh the
costs and generally we see direct returns within
12 months."
Candidates interested in applying for
apprenticeship work in the hospitality sector
should visit the UKSP Apprenticeship website for
